Secondary trauma and community resilience

Trauma is catching! Anyone who works with traumatised children and families may find at some point in their career that they are affected by secondary trauma. Through empathy the adult tunes in to the toxic stress that is the child's everyday experience, and from time to time this can be overwhelming. This course enables learners to understand key issues about the impact of secondary trauma on individuals, organisations and the support networks, and then practice and develop skills in recognition, prevention and management of those effects.

Learning outcomes / assessment criteria

  1. Understand the impact of working with traumatised children and young people
    1. Explain the signs and indicators of secondary stress for individuals and within the network, identifying factors which increase resilience
    2. Explain the signs and indicators of secondary stress disorders identifying those factors which increase vulnerability
    3. Analyse key factors in promoting recovery from secondary traumatic stress disorders
  2. Understand the factors affecting systems and organisations which promote risk competence in relation to secondary trauma
    1. Explain the nature and importance of the ‘team around the child’ in working with traumatised children and young people
    2. Explain the importance of recognising the hazard of secondary trauma for those working with vulnerable children, young people and families
  3. Be able to develop skills in preventing and managing secondary trauma in your work setting
    1. Explain how awareness of and resilience to secondary stress is promoted in own setting
    2. Evaluate how you can promote effective teamwork and network structures to prevent, and aid recovery from, secondary stress disorders
