This course enables learners to understand how adult responses to the behaviour of children and young people has an impact on the brain development of the child, to recognise different styles of response, to use the practical tool of emotion coaching to address behaviour in the moment in a way that promotes positive brain development and pro-social behaviour and to plan to implement the approaches in own work environment

Learning outcomes / assessment criteria

  1. Understand key principles underlying relational approaches to behaviour including emotion coaching
    1. Analyse how emotion coaching, a relational approach to working with children and young people, developed from extensive research
    2. Describe how emotion coaching contributes to healthy brain development
  2. Be able to develop skills in using emotion coaching in practice
    1. Explain how to use empathy and guidance in own work to help children and young people to manage their behaviour
    2. Discuss how the processes involved in emotion coaching can increase the resilience and self confidence of vulnerable children and young people
  3. Be able to review how organisations can promote or hinder positive relational approaches
    1. Analyse the necessary conditions within an organisation for developing positive relational approaches to managing behaviour
    2. Explain how you plan to promote, monitor and evaluate emotion coaching, as an example of a relational approach, in practice
